About the Heart Transplant Association of St. Louis

In 1987, HTA of St. Louis was founded to provide emotional, educational, and psychological support to pre and post heart transplant patients and their families. In March of 1998, the Heart Transplant Association of St. Louis was incorporated and became a 501 c (3) non-profit organization. As such, our charter is to help all heart transplant patients in the St Louis area.

That help is provided in the following way:

  1. To provide emotional, educational, and psychological support to pre and post heart transplants and VAD patients and their families.
  2. To provide services in the furtherance of maintaining the physical and emotional well-being of all heart transplant recipients and heart transplant candidates, and the families of such recipients and candidates.
  3. To educate the general public on the emotional, physical, and psychological consequences of heart transplants.
  4. To act as liaison between recipients of heart transplants and candidates for heart transplants and their families.
  5. To promote donor awareness of the need for heart donations in and around the St. Louis Community.
  6. To provide support and encouragement to organizations formed to assist heart transplant recipients and their families.

The main premise is to be available to the pre and post heart transplantees and their families to answer questions about the surgery and what to expect after surgery. Bi monthly support meetings provide educational information about medications, after effects of the surgery, recovery issues, the recovery process, etc.

Mentors visit pre and post heart transplantees and their families to answer questions about the surgery.  The trained mentors visit in pairs, a transplantee and his or her caregiver.  Those mentors provide a tremendous service to the new transplantee and his or her family

What this all adds up is that the Heart Transplant Association of St. Louis aims to be of benefit to fellow transplant patients in need.
